Kona bees are known for having a stronger developed resistance to Varroa mites and diseases. They are also big honey producers. When Varroa Mites came on the scene 20 plus years ago, Hawaiian beekeepers made the conscious decision not to treat for this new pest. This resulted in 90% of the bees dying the first year but the 10% that lived became the new survivor stock that was bred for decades to give us these hardier battle tested bees.
